Atherton 4 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi there, I'm looking to track down the following Atherton family: In 1841 census living at Bamford St Stockport (First District) was James Atherton 45 Head M Bobbin Turner b. Cheshire, Mary Atherton 50 Wife b. Cheshire, Ellen Atherton 15 Dau Weaver b. Cheshire, James Atherton 13 b. Cheshire and Peter Atherton 12 b. Cheshire. James died on 4 Apr 1847 (Informant was John Atherton - relationship not stated!)whilst living at the same address, but have no idea what happened to Mary his wife or their children Ellen and James. Although I am a direct descendant of Peter his other son, I have no idea what happened to him either! Any assistance/guidance both prior to 1841 and post 1847 would be very much appreciated! Regards, Derek

Frithy,

This has been my brickwall for some time - although I did manage to track down Mary his wife - she remarried in 1859 (as a Spinster!).

Peter (born circa 1829) has been my main problem area - he just disappeared after birth of Elizabeth Ellen in 1857! I have no trace of either baptism/death and I only have him on one Census - the 1841 - not found in 1851.

If you have any ideas - most gratefully accepted! My website at www.tribalpages.com/tribes/atherton182
gives more information.

Hi Derek,
Yes he's still a problem. I think the 1891 Stockport census you have for him looks promising. So my bet is he died 1891-1901.
Most likely Stockport. Can't see him traveling much turned 60.
There is a JAMES Atherton died 1898 Q1 Stockport. Vol 8a. page 78. Aged 69 (1829) birth date.
Can you account for this JAMES elsewhere in your tree.
If not it might be worth taking a look at the cert.
Joan Arnold. (frithy)
